of the Southwest
The indians cooking of the Southwest are creative and colorful. This is pinon and ponderosa country, the home of the Pueblo tribe. They are peace of farmers who labor to coax a living from thier land and who have withstood dust storms, droughts and famine. Only nineteen Pueblo are active to day. They live in the west, north, and south of Santa Fe- Zuni, Taos, San Ildefonso, Santo Domingo, and Jemez these are only a few. The life of the Pueblos are the same as it was centuries ago. The women spcialize in the stew cookery. The women also have a special talent with vegetables. There are also the Hopi they are like the Pueblos. The Hopi who are the peaceful of all people. they grow twelve diffrent colors of beans, four colors of corn. Hopi Woman uses dicriminatingly the meal of each one to produce diffrent flavors. All of the Hopi girls are taught to bake bread early. Hopi girls must become skilled and quick in at the piki stone because they belive that if you dont than the girl is not ready for marrige. Even today this stone is the only way to make thier pastel colored pastry. The Hopi boys and the Pueblo boys learn early how to sow, weed, and harvest crops. Among all tribes each meal starts with a prayer and still is.
