The southern groups include Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole, Powhatan, and Creek. Columbus found the Native Americans. The Cherokee of northern Georgia and later North Carolina were among the more advanced Native American tribes. Cherokee women were outstanding cooks. It was through the West Indies and the southern Atlantic states that Europeans were first first introduced to North America and its strange new foods. When Spanish adventurers arrived years later, they found oysters, shrimp, and blue crabs blown onto the beaches by sub-tropical storms.
