The Fisherman of the Pacific Northwest Coast.
The Northwest Pacific Coast Indians, made very good use out of their environmental surroundings, they hunted many animals, used the salt water from the ocean for broth in soups, and ate wild berries and fruits and vegetables. It was believed by the Indians that Salmon were not fish but that they were "spirit people," who lived under the sea. The men were known to hunt the animals, and catch the fish, but it was the women's job to clean and cook the animals, but they also had to pick the berries and fruits and vegetables, seeing as it was considered as a lightweight job. Women were judged by the way they ate, if they even so much as look up from their food, they were not considered good wife material. It was very popular for the men to carve things into trees, to produce a "totem pole," or guardian spirits.
